The Globe and Mail has published an interesting opinion piece by Mike Moffatt, entitled “Tobi Lutke’s voting idea is offensive. The concern behind it isn’t”, which cites my research on the political economy of ageing. Writing about the Shopify founder’s suggestion that pensioners be excluded from voting, Moffatt sets the idea aside but draws on my finding that ageing electorates increasingly deprioritise economic growth: they are less likely to punish governments for weak economic performance, less likely to back long-term investment, and more likely to reward greater financial support for older voters.
